Brief history

At the time of Dutch rule, North Sumatra is a rule called Gouvernement van Sumatra area includes the entire island of Sumatra, headed by a governor who is based in the city of Medan.

After independence, the first session of the National Committee of Regions (KND), Sumatra and then divided into three sub-provinces namely North Sumatra, Central Sumatra, and South Sumatra. North Sumatra province itself is an amalgamation of the three administrative regions, namely the so-called residency: Resident of Aceh, Residency of East Sumatra, and the Residency Tapanuli.

With the publication of the Law of the Republic of Indonesia (RI) No. 10 Year 1948 on April 15, 1948, stipulated that Sumatra is divided into three provinces, each of which has the right to organize and manage his own household, namely: Province of North Sumatra, Central Sumatra, and South Sumatra Province. Dated 15 April 1948 subsequently determined as the anniversary of North Sumatra Province.

In early 1949, a re-do government reorganization in Sumatra. With the Emergency Government Decision R.I. No. 22 / Gov / PDRI on May 17, 1949, abolished the post of Governor of North Sumatra. Furthermore, the Decree of the Government of RI Emergency on December 17, 1949, established the Aceh Province and the Province of Tapanuli / East Sumatra. Then, with a Government Regulation in Lieu of Law No. 5 Year 1950 on August 14, 1950, provision was lifted and reshaped North Sumatra Province.

By Act R.I. No. 24 of 1956, promulgated on December 7, 1956, established the Autonomous Region of Aceh province, so that the region of North Sumatra Province sebahagian be the province of Aceh.

Meaning of Symbol:

1. The fist hand stretched out over clutching his shield and his chain, symbolizing the determination of the people's struggle against imperialism North Sumatra Province / colonialism, feudalism and communism.

2. The five-pointed rod, shield and chain, symbolizing the unity of the people in defending and maintaining the Pancasila.

3. Factories, ports, rubber trees, palm trees, leaf tobacco, fish, rice leaf and the words "North Sumatra", symbolizes a beautiful area, scenic, famous with its natural resources galore.

4. Seventeen cotton bud, eight corner cobwebs and forty-five grains of rice, describing the date, month and year in which the independence is following all three sticks under fist, symbolizing cultural character that reflects the greatness of the nation, patriotism, lovers of peace and justice advocates.

5. Bukit Barisan culminating five, symbolizing the social order noble, excited unity and cooperativeness dynamic.
